Austria Ski Trip
Myself and my two teenagers decided we were going to go skiing - I had skiied once as a teenager so didn’t plan on skiing, my eldest had gone skiing with school and my youngest had no experience - I wasn’t sure how this was going to pan out.
We decided on Austria which was a bit of a trek from Cork. We flew via Schipol to Innsbruck and travelled by train from Innsbruck to the town of Seefeld.
The Verdict? We loved the place - our layover in Schipol was manageable on the way out and we reached our accommodation by the afternoon. We were able to walk from the train station to our hotel and the town was quite compact and easy to get around. We had booked a private ski instructor in advance for our first day so the two teenagers had instruction for the morning and the afternoon. From there, they were up and running and were able to manage the lifts and slopes by themselves. You could walk from our hotel to the slopes but there were regular buses running throughout the day also.
Seefeld was absolutely perfect for our dynamics - two ski slopes to choose from with plenty of opportunity to vary it up with more challenging slopes. It may not be advanced enough for some but was perfect for our level of experience.
The place we stayed in was really lovely - Boutique Hotel Olympia - it was welcoming, warm and exactly what we were looking for. The room for the 3 of us was perfect - a divider between one large double and another with plenty of storage space and room. The shower and sink area was separate to the toilet which suited us very well as 3 girls. The breakfast options were varied and delicious and they had a little bar there if you wanted a drink in the evening - you just had be mindful that it closed at 10pm!
While the girls were skiing, I took the opportunity to do some lovely treks - there are miles of well marked trails in all directions to choose from. The views and surroundings are stunning and it was very peaceful. The longest walk I did was about 10 miles and that included a bit of an incline which was quite treacherous at times so I would consider spikes for my walking boots if I was visiting again at that time of year. It is also a haven for cross country skiing which is something I would consider next time.
Our layover in Schipol on the way home was quite long, so we did treat ourselves to the lounge at the airport which, while expensive, was well worth it.
We loved our time in Austria - Seefeld was a relaxed town which met our needs perfectly. The girls skiied for the morning, we would meet for lunch and they would head out again in the afternoon. There was plenty of restaurant choices for the evening time and we could walk everywhere. An active and inclusive holiday that left us feeling tired but refreshed, and wanting more!
